Construction Process

21st October 2022

For the past few months on my drive to work, I have been charting the demolition of an old house and the on-going building of a new property on the now vacated plot. This is a process I find fascinating to watch albeit through short glances as I drive past.

As the building has moved from the initial ground breaking preparation works and foundation laying, it has been followed by the construction of the ground and then first floor followed by the roof. Sadly, building work has now moved inside so it is less clear how progress is being made.

Each stage of the construction process, much like the work carried out across our schools, builds on previous work that has occurred. Each stage is clearly reliant on the professional craft that has taken place before, reinforcing and adding further value to what is already there.

Most of my own career, in many ways has been working on the upper floors in a range of secondary school environments. It has only been in the last 6-7 years that I have been able to fully understand and indeed have had the opportunity to appreciate the complexity of the foundations on which everything else is built.

A reminder to us all that we need to look to opportunities to understand how others, including parents, have contributed to the personal and academic development of every child and to appreciate that at every stage, the wonder of learning takes place.
