We all need someone to turn to

18th November 2022

So, this morning I set off for the SCITT office ready for a day of interviews! The traffic was awful and living out in West Sussex the rain of last night had caused havoc! Thinking a back route might be better, I decided to detour down a country lane. Coming over a small bridge I faced a very large 'puddle' and a car coming towards me! The tidal wave this created brought an amazing array of lights onto my dashboard and the complete demise of my engine!

What do I do? I phone my Dad of course! I know I am far too old to still be doing that, but old habits die hard. His advice was sound as always, 'Phone the AA Jo, there's nothing I can do!' So as I sat in my car and waited, I pondered why my dad was the first person I called even though he lives 50 miles away!

I came to this conclusion. My dad is a man of few words, calm, measured and when he does say something you know that it has been carefully considered. His voice is reassuring and it has been there through the stresses and pleasures of my life! I rang him because I knew he wouldn't judge me, he wouldn't question why I was stupid enough to drive into the puddle and would make a sensible suggestion. He didn't let me down!

School life can be a bit like that 'puddle' lurking over a bridge in the early morning light. It surprises you, makes your jump and every now and then throws you off track! When this happens we all need someone to turn to, that one sage person who offers us advice.

I wonder who that is for you? When we face a tricky situation, in our personal or professional life, talking it through helps us to react rationally, calmly and with a suitable perspective. The coming weeks are often some of the hardest in the school year. The evenings are dark, the days can be gloomy and we are all weary. This is when we need other people around us the most! Building a network within your school and the wider trust will support and guide you.

Never be afraid to talk things through, reflect and make decisions! Update: So, my Dad's advice was good! I phoned the AA as he suggested, they have now towed me clear of the water and we are off to a garage! I am not going to think about the fact that my car doesn't start or how much the repairs might cost! I am just going to appreciate the advice of people around me and the support they offer when I need it most!

Stay safe everyone!
