Overcoming the unexpected

31st January 2022

Whilst typing this in the central office, I am enjoying a mask free moment! It has become the norm in our lives to wear face masks, but this week has seen the lifting of restrictions further. You might think it easy for me to say this sitting in an office, I know only too much though, the very real challenges that our schools have and continue to face with the ongoing pandemic.

Our school leaders and staff teams ought to be saluted for keeping the plates spinning, our staff teams across the trust have stepped up to cover and support colleagues who have been unwell or unable to attend their workplace, often working above and beyond. Our learners of all ages, from those dipping their tiny two year old toes into the education waters to those getting ready for the world of work and life beyond the school system, have benefitted from the vast experiences that we have continued to provide during these times. We owe our gratitude to you all.

Whilst the work from home mandate has been lifted, we have very much been a business-as-usual model. Despite the daily operational challenges, our schools have effectively engaged in our school improvement work. Recently I have had the pleasure of working with a number of staff across our trust schools to develop pedagogy and subject leadership. I have been impressed with the high level of engagement and the commitment to work together, to share expertise, workload and practical teaching and learning resources. This true collaboration puts our trust values at the heart of our work and we are starting to see the impact in our classrooms.

None of the work or educational experiences would be possible without our teams demonstrating resilience during these trying times, we’ve learnt new skills, we’ve kept going for our learners and hopefully we are thriving for the very best. I leave you with the words by Jamais Cascio to ponder…

Resilience is all about being able to overcome the unexpected. Sustainability is about survival. The goal of resilience is to thrive.

I hope you get some time off the crazy treadmill of school life with the upcoming half term or at least time to top up your resilience bucket!
