Importance of service and dedication to others

27th May 2022

I am still nostalgic for the time when the National College for School Leadership (NCSL) existed as a trail blazing organisation supporting school leadership across the country through a wider range of professional leadership development activities.

At the time (and it still may be true), nothing like it existed anywhere in the World. Sadly, it merged in 2013 with the Teaching Agency and its wider remit shifted. As well as the range of National Professional Qualifications and other professional development, the NCSL ran a programme called ‘Accelerate to Headship: Tomorrow’s Heads Programme’ designed to enable those with the highest potential to move rapidly to headship.

I had the privilege of working with a range of such leaders, and I am delighted to report that two of them are senior leaders within Learning Partners. Another teacher I worked with and who was also highlighted as a system leader of the future was Deborah James who as Bowelbabe has and continues to be an example to us all. At that time she was a senior leader at a West London school, later to be Deputy Headteacher at Salesian School in Chertsey.

In all our meetings she demonstrated her passionate commitment to school leadership and to the progress of all pupils. I am sure we are all aware how since 2016, she has redefined her own version of system leadership and targeted her passion and commitment towards highlighting bowel cancer, its symptoms and wider embarrassment. As we approach half-term and the Platinum Jubilee celebrations, we are reminded too about the importance of service and dedication to others.

At Learning Partners, the dedication and service which has recently been captured in a short trust video – available soon - was evident for everyone to see and hear; what remarkable things we achieve every single day. None of us know whether such service will be long or short so an important reminder to live well and to enjoy life.
