Resilience and Application

26th August 2022

Despite two years of disruption, yesterday’s stellar GCSE results highlight the resilience and application required and demonstrated by the students across Learning Partners Academy Trust.

Learning Partners are delighted with the strong GCSE results published by its four secondary schools.  On 25 August, students from Fullbrook, George Abbot, Guildford County and Kings College received their GCSE results after what can only be described as a very difficult two years for all involved.  The toll that these last 30 months has taken on many cannot be underestimated and should be acknowledged.   The results, however, showed a marked improvement from 2019; Learning Partners would like to congratulate all students receiving their results today and at the same time take the opportunity to thank all staff for their dedication and care.

The last two years has seen much disruption in education caused by the pandemic and young people have had to build on their resilience and dig deep for self-discipline.  School staff have felt more under pressure than ever to ensure that the young people they serve don’t miss out on any learning and are still able to fulfil their potential.  All pupils and staff have responded admirably to the changes in circumstances brought about by Covid and have overcome its associated challenges with skill.

There is much to celebrate and much to look forward to as young people within the trust choose their next path.  As the world returns to some normality, we as a trust are very excited for them.

The results across the trust are as below:

Metric 2022 2019 Diff.
% of pupils achieving a grade 4 or more in English & Maths 81.1% 76.1% +5.0%
% of pupils achieving a grade 5 or more in English & Maths 62.8% 55.9% +6.9%
% of all grades awarded 9-4 83.1% 76.4% +6.7%
% of all grades awarded 9-7 32.3% 26.0% +6.3%

Jack Mayhew, CEO of Learning Partners said “Each and every student should be immensely proud of themselves, we are certainly very proud of them all; they have overcome adversity during these last two years, and we hope that the courage they have shown throughout and prior to the exam season will continue and grow as they move forward in their lives.  Our schools have equipped them with determination, resilience and curiosity and we are confident that these skills will lead them to further success.  I would like to thank all staff in the schools for the dedicated support and guidance they have provided to ensure that the GCSE cohort of 2022 achieved these results.  We are very proud to be leading schools where children thrive.”

Katie Moore, Principal of Fullbrook School said “Everyone at Fullbrook, can be proud of their achievements, and most importantly, use this to give them confidence to take that next step and be better than they ever thought they could be!  As I am leaving Fullbrook, this will be the last group of students I celebrate results with. I want to say thank you and wish all our students every success for the future, whether they’re re-joining Fullbrook 6 or setting off on another exciting path. I have very much enjoyed working with you all”

Kate Carriett, Headteacher of George Abbot School said “It has been an incredible journey for the GCSE cohort of 2022, which has concluded with a superb set of results.  We congratulate each and every one of our students; we are delighted that their hard work and determination has been richly rewarded.  We feel very privileged that the majority have chosen to continue their journey with us and look forward to welcoming them back in September.  We are sure that those moving on to pastures new will do so with strength and great resilience.”

Steve Smith, Headteacher of Guildford County School said “Results day represents the end of one phase of each student’s education and is a terrific opportunity to recognise and celebrate what they have all achieved.  We are delighted to be able to congratulate the Year 11 Class of 2022 for their fantastic results and also to wish them well as they move on to the next phase of their lives with our full support and our very best wishes for the future.  For most, I am thrilled to say that this will be here at Guildford County Sixth Form and we cannot wait to welcome them and a large number of external recruits through the doors in September.”

Alastair McKenzie, Principal of Kings College Guildford said “I am pleased with the successes our GCSE cohort of 2022 have achieved; their results are richly deserved and are a reflection of the hard-working community and passion to succeed that we have here at Kings.  Staff encourage students to be ambitious and are driven by the desire to improve outcomes for all; students are aware of their potential and have high aspirations.  Congratulations to each and every one of our students, we shall miss them all very much; they have been a delight to teach.  We wish them all the very best and look forward to hearing about their future successes.”
