Hello!
Life Lesson
During a recent lunch event, my sister, Kristina, found herself seated next to an eminent scientist—85 years old, with a remarkable career leading on genetic engineering. He radiated life, energy and positivity. As they enjoyed their conversation, she recognised that this was her moment to ask the ultimate question:
"What is the secret to a long and happy life?"
She waited eagerly for his response. The scientist paused, took a deep breath, and carefully considered his words. Then, with the wisdom of a lifetime, he revealed his three guiding principles:
Firstly—always have a purpose. It doesn’t matter what it is, as long as it matters to you. A sense of purpose drives us forward, helps us organise our lives, and gives us the resilience to navigate challenges.
Secondly—spend time with family and friends. Meaningful connections bring happiness and fulfilment. Being surrounded by loved ones creates a sense of belonging, reduces stress, and strengthens self-worth.
Finally—and perhaps most importantly—look after your knees.
As educators, our purpose is deeply rooted in shaping the lives of young people and supporting their families. There is no greater mission. But even the most meaningful purpose must be balanced with time spent with those we care about and moments dedicated to our own well-being.
So, as we strive to nurture and uplift others, let’s also remember to look after ourselves. Because in doing so, we ensure that we can continue making a difference—for many years to come.
