New beginnings

13th January 2023

The new year always brings the hope of new beginning. Learning Partners is no different and we have had a number of new beginnings recently. The Trust wide INSET day on January 3rd was a highly successful new beginning. Held across the three sites of Kings College (Primary learning conference), George Abbot (Secondary learning conference) and Guildford County (Support colleagues conference), we had a fantastic day listening to key notes speakers and sharing best practice from within our own organisation.

This effective balance of external expertise and perspective, coupled with celebrating and sharing the talent and expertise we have within our own organisation proved effective and worthwhile. While we always recognise there were some aspects we wish to improve upon next year, the feedback we have received has been overwhelmingly supportive and positive. Your comments echo the core aim of supporting you to make a difference to the young people we serve. If our training does not have impact upon children, we have failed. We are constantly striving to make a difference in our interactions with children’s learning, growth and development. I’d like to extend my grateful thanks to all those that made the day successful.

We have also had new beginnings in the base for the trust central team. Moving to Mary Road, Guildford and the proposed Maths School building is an exciting time and an important step for us as an organisation. We have kindly been hosted by George Abbot and Guildford County schools in recent years, but to step out and forge our new path feels significant. As most of you are aware this move is made in conjunction with the DfE plans for a new Surrey Maths School (SMS), which will be a new trust school, opening in either September 2024 or 2025. Timings are dependent on construction and planning schedules.

Developed in conjunction with Surrey University, this selective school specialising in Mathematics and STEM education for 16-18 year olds will offer inspiring education to students from a wide area. In due course, this specialist Maths School will be one of only twelve acrosss the country. SMS will be serving students from South London to Portsmouth, Brighton to Basingstoke. Our location near Guildford station is perfect for this endeavour.

Our final new beginning is the start of the new year. Often a time of hope and opportunity. Whether you have broken new resolutions already (my dry January effort has failed already!) or you see longer lasting opportunities, we wish you all the best for 2023. Our trust is developing with your help, guidance and support. We have much to celebrate in our schools and communities, but also much to aspire to.  Constantly seeking to support each other, innovate, be ambitious in the face of tall challenges and continue our focus on becoming ‘Leading schools where children thrive’.
